WHAT
WE'VE DONE
We are very proud of the following facts concerning
our
organization's outreach in the state of New Mexico.
- New
Mexico has been consistently among the top ten states receiving
scholarships from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF). Since
its inception, the Alliance has raised close to $2 million and awarded
over 2400 HSF scholarships to New Mexico students.
- Two
universities in the state - the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque
and New Mexico State University at Las Cruses are among the top
25 colleges and universities in the nation receiving scholarships
from HSF.
- The
New Mexico Alliance for Hispanic Education is HSF's major contributor
in the state. The Alliance holds several special events that
benefit HSF. Among those events is the annual HSF Golf Tour
held in Albuquerque, Taos and Angel Fire.
- For
the 1999 - 2000 academic year, the funds contributed by the New
Mexico Alliance for Hispanic Education enabled HSF to award $489,000
to 200 Hispanic students from New Mexico.
-
The New Mexico Alliance for Hispanic Education continues receiving
financial support from many New Mexico-based businesses, corporation,
foundation and individuals through their participation in the annual
golf tour and through membership in the Alliance.

youth-About Membership in the Alliance
The
New Mexico Alliance for Hispanic Education is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3)
organization whose only mission is to assist New Mexico's Hispanic college
students fulfill their education dreams by providing them with scholarship
dollars. The Alliance membership is made up of individuals representing
small business, corporations and foundations. Membership dues
range from $5,000 to $25,000 annually. All contributions to the Alliance
go directly for scholarships and are tax deductible as allowed by law.
As an Alliance member, your dollars will sponsor students selected to
receive scholarships at the Celebration of Achievement Luncheon held
each Spring. The NeedThe state of Hispanic education is alarming.
The
participation gap between Hispanics and other groups is widening:
- Hispanics
have the highest dropout rates (29.5%) of any major racial or ethnic
group ages (16 to 24). For non-Hispanic Whites, it's less
than 8%.
- Hispanics
have the lowest college attendance. Only 36% of Hispanics
(ages 18 to 24) graduating from high school choose to go on to college,
compared with 45.3% of non-Hispanic Whites.
- Only
10.3% of all Hispanic adults (ages 25 and up) have a bachelor's
degree, compared with 24.6% of non-Hispanic Whites.A cycle is thereby
created. Parents with a lower median income are less able
to support the higher education of their children.
These
facts will greatly impact our state's future economy. Today, Hispanics
account for more than one out of every four new workers entering the
labor force. An educated Hispanic population is fundamental to
the future productivity and growth of our state's and country's economy.
